The department of Physics began its journey in June 1979. It has been a well established department at the undergraduate level with experienced faculty members. The department is functioning effectively with 10 staff members including 2 Guest Lecturer.
The Pass percentage of this academic year 2015-16 is 87.5, Two of our staff members Dr. K. Janaki and Dr. C. Inmozhi are participating in active research, guiding seven students to qualify Ph.D. A minor Research project has been sanctioned by UGC with a grant of Rs 1, 30,000/= to Dr. C.Inmozhi. This academic year, two more research project proposals were sent to RUSA.
Department Magazine “QUANTA” has been published for the past two years which exhibits knowledge and skills of students and staffs.
Three of our staff members received certificates of commemoration and a cash prize of Rs.2000/- each for completing 25 years of unblemished service sponsored by the state government.
Our Department Physics Association organized a Seminar on Space Science on 25.10.16. The Chief Guest Mr. T. Jayamurugan, Senior Quality control Inspector, SAIL, Salem introduced ‘galaxies and universe’ to our students through the PPT presentation.
This academic year Ms.Kowsika ( III B.Sc Physics EM) received four rolling shields for her best academic performance in all subjects. She won the overall general proficiency prize for the science stream and brought laurels to our department. Apart from academic proficiency our students excel in sports and other co-curricular activities. S.Sandhiya (III B.Sc Physics TM) won first prize in 5 athletic events and bagged the overall championship of this year in sports.
Our department organized a seminar on “Thin film technology and application” on 09.10.14. Dr. S. Sudhakar Ph.D. Scientist CSIR-National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi, explained the function and fabrication of solar cell and the students were benefited a lot. To create awareness about environmental eco system, the department conducted a seminar on “Global warming” by Mr. A.K.P Kathirvelu, Environments, on 09.02.15. He discussed about the effect of global warming and the challenges imposed by the climate change and how to protect mother nature from it.
To upgrade the knowledge of the students and enhance their skills to meet the competitive world the “Quiz club” is run by the Department of Physics. The “Quiz club” consists of 45 student members from all the department of the college which aims to plant the seeds of learning in young minds and to encourage them to nurture the seeds.
This year the pass percentage of this year’s out gone students is 62.6% This academic year 2013-2014 our department organized “Science Exhibition on 14.02.2014 and 15.02.2014. Over 75 students enthusiastically participated in the program reveling this talents. Around 36 projects were displayed focusing aspect Viz excrement based on the basic of physics, models insisting on various pollution control, global warming, electronic projects like advanced security system, intruder with micro sensors. All the college students and staff members of our college visited the exhibition. Demo model of “ Paper Friction” was well appreciated by the public and published in he news paper also. All the participants were warred with prize books along with the participant certificates.
